Public may respond via online survey
The City of St. Augustine is soliciting suggestions for the naming of the public property located at 91 Coquina Avenue, currently referred to as “Coquina Park.”
In order to properly name the park, in accordance with Resolution 2016-15, the city will accept public input and suggestions for two weeks, beginning tomorrow, Friday, July 31 and concluding on Friday, August 14. A committee composed of one representative each from the Planning and Building, Public Works, and Communications Departments, will review the public input, summarize the suggestions, and make a recommendation to the City Manager. The City Manager will offer the recommended name to the City Commission for consideration and adoption during the currently scheduled City Commission meeting on September 14.
“The name Coquina Park is certainly an appropriate and acceptable name as it stands,” commented Communications Manager Melissa Wissel. “However, in keeping with the protocols of naming public property, we did not want to miss the opportunity to get input from the community if an alternative name might be suggested.”
According to the resolution, suggestions should consider neighborhood or geographical identification, natural or geological features, a place or event of historical or cultural significance, the articulated preference of residents of the neighborhood surrounding the space, or a deceased person or persons who has made significant and outstanding contributions of public service to the community.
Suggestions will be gathered through an online survey, which will include providing a brief supportive statement as to why the name is suggested and contact information of the person making the suggestion. The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/Coquina
Submissions also may be mailed to: Communications Department, City of St. Augustine, P. O. Box 210, St. Augustine, FL 32085; faxed to 904.825-1096; or emailed to info@citystaug.com.
