City Archeologist Receives Florida Anthropological Society’s President’s Award
City of St. Augustine Archaeology staff recently attended the Florida Anthropological Society’s (FAS) 76th Annual Meeting in Pensacola, Florida. At the Society’s conference, Dr. Andrea White, City Archaeologist, received the President’s Award for her service and contributions to the FAS.
Dr. White, along with her co-editor, Deborah Mullins, were recognized for their work as editors for The Florida Anthropologist, the Society’s quarterly, peer-reviewed academic journal. During their tenure (2006-2011), they published 18 journal volumes containing over 50 articles in addition to dozens of book reviews and a raft of annual archaeology field school summaries from participating Florida universities and colleges.
Dr. White and Mullins were the only the second female editors in the journal’s’ history following renowned anthropologist Adeliade Bullen 50 years earlier. Starting in 1948, The Florida Anthropologist has been published for 77 years and serves as a place to distribute peer-reviewed research papers, and articles of interest relating to Florida archaeology and anthropology.
City Staff Presents Poster
Katherine Sims, Research and Collections Archaeologist, presented a poster with co-presenter Emily Jane Murray with the Florida Public Archaeology Network, Northeast (FPAN). The poster, titled Smells Like School Spirit: Using GPR to Locate Privies at the St. Benedict the Moor School, St. Augustine, highlighted the collaboration between the City of St. Augustine Archaeology Program and FPAN during recent City excavations at the first, private black school in Lincolnville. The Sisters of St. Joseph operated the school between 1898 and the 1960s and they are currently renovating the school building.
St. Augustine Archaeological Association receives Arthur R. Lee FAS Chapter Award
In addition to the President’s Award, the St. Augustine Archaeological Association (SAAA), the local Florida Anthropological Society (FAS) chapter, was presented the Arthur R. Lee FAS Chapter Award. Bestowed annually, this award recognizes chapters for their achievements with outstanding public outreach and education. City archaeologists Dr. Andrea White and Katherine Sims serve as SAAA President and Vice President respectively. SAAA previously earned the FAS Chapter Award in 2003 for their outstanding service in the field and lab for the City of St. Augustine Archaeology Program. SAAA was founded in 1985 to support archaeological preservation activities and legislation in St. Augustine and northeast Florida.
