Project Update 04.28.25
On Monday, April 28, the City Commission voted to cancel the public art project and decide at a future date how to use the remaining unspent funds. This decision and the commission discussion is available online here.
Overview
The City’s Public Art Committee has selected three finalists out of a pool of 96 applicants who submitted their proposals for the art installation at the May Street and San Marco intersection. The application period began in March after the Committee went through the necessary steps to host the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) (PDF) process.
Project Vision
This art installation is designed not only to enhance the aesthetics of the area but also to reflect the rich diversity of St. Augustine's culture. The chosen designs align with our commitment to celebrate community and history, intertwining local heritage with innovative artistry.
Design Requirements
The finalists' proposals were selected based on their originality and their ability to meet the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) standards. Each design ensures:
- Durability: Capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions and heavy traffic.
- Safety and Integrity: Maintains structural integrity with minimal maintenance.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Achieves aesthetic goals within a feasible budget.
