SCAM ALERT: Ignore Fake Letters Demanding Payment for City Permits

Fake letters demanding payment for unpaid permits are circulating and are not official City correspondence.

News Flash Posted on November 05, 2025

The City of St. Augustine has been alerted that some residents have received scam letters claiming they owe money for unpaid permits. These letters are not legitimate and do not come from the City or any official department.

Please know:

  • The City will never ask you to wire money for permits or fees.
  • These fake letters may look official, but if something seems off, like a demand for immediate payment or unfamiliar contact info, it’s likely a scam.
  • If the email did not come from a citystaug.com email address it is likely a scam.

What to do if you receive one of these letters:

  • Do not send any money or personal information.
  • When in doubt, contact the City directly using verified contact information to confirm permit status.
  • If you think you may have been a victim of this or any scam, contact the St. Augustine Police Department
