Visitor Information Center operations modified for restoration project

State grant funding provided for restoration and repairs to historic site

News Flash Posted on January 14, 2025

On Monday, January 27, 2025, the City of St. Augustine will implement a modified floor plan of daily operations at the St. Augustine and St. Johns County Visitor Information Center (VIC), for approximately 19 days, for a construction project.  The main exhibition hall's original 1935 heart pine floors have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced.

Following the initial nine days of modified floor plan operations, there will be a brief period of full closure to treat and seal the new flooring.  Additionally, there will be another period of brief modified floor plan operations during regular hours of operation as the exhibits and Gift Shop are returned to their new operational design.

The City’s objective is to complete the project with minimal disruption to daily operations as quickly and safely as possible. The projected timeframe is as follows:

  • January 27 - February 4, 2025: Modified operations for preparation and removal of artifacts and displays, temporary closure of Gift shop.
  • February 5-11, 2025: VIC full closure for treating and sealing of the new heart pine flooring.
  • February 5-14, 2025: Return of artifacts, display set-up, and Gift Shop restoration.
  • February 15, 2025: Resume VIC normal operations.

The modified operations schedule allows for public access to facilities and services, such as restrooms, information hosts and pamphlets, kiosks for Old Town Trolley sightseeing tours, and the University of Florida's Explorer Passport program, at a smaller or limited capacity.

The City of St. Augustine recently received a $3.6M grant from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources for renovations and repairs to several city buildings listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, which includes the VIC.
