SMART St. Augustine is part of regional plan to improve traffic safety, parking, mobility and more

The City of St. Augustine will host a public open house on Thursday, September 26, beginning at 5:30pm until 7:00pm, in The Alcazar Room of City Hall, located at 75 King Street.

This public workshop is an opportunity for anyone interested to view project exhibits and speak with City and project staff about new infrastructure technology and solution coming to St. Augustine.

The City will be implementing above and below ground technology to meet these goals, as well as including the potential of addressing street flooding.  The project will also provide transportation solutions for those underserved to reach education facilities, jobs, healthcare facilities, and other social services.

During the public open house there will be a looping presentation which will include details on the project, project posters and exhibits.  The concept plans and public presentation are available on the City’s webpage at www.CityStAug.com/SmartStAug.

The project goals are:

  • Improve traffic congestion
  • Improve parking and pedestrian safety
  • Improve street light deficiencies
  • Provide/enhance commercial parking

The project is going through the Project Development and Environment Study process and is proposing to deploy Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) throughout the city.  The SMART St. Augustine project is included in the larger area’s SMART Region Master Plan prepared in 2018 by the North Florida TPO and further refined in the SMART St. Augustine Master Plan adopted in 2019.  See attached flyer or visit the project website linked above for more information.

Funding is through non-federal contributions and a competitive federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant applied for in 2022 out of which this project was one of 148 selected. The estimated total cost for this project is approximately $15.3M.

Comments from the community and any interested persons are encouraged. Those comments received or postmarked by October 10, 2024, will be included in the official public record. Please email comments to smartstaug@citystaug.com.
