City of St. Augustine to reopen Spanish Street

Ribbon cutting scheduled for Friday, April 12

News Flash Posted on April 05, 2024

The City of St. Augustine is proud to announce the re-opening of Tolomato Lane and Spanish Street, between Cuna Street and Orange Street.

Since August 2023, the project has been under construction as part of the Downtown Improvements District Phase 2 which is the implementation of curbless streets within the town plan.

Cuna Street had been temporarily turned to a one-way street in the opposite direction, heading East to West, during the project.  Residents spoke frequently to the City Commission and to city staff about their preference to keep the temporary change in place permanently once the street re-opened.

In response, the City has agreed to keep the street directional changes in place as part of a pilot to see how it works.  “The residents at that end of Spanish Street have patiently, and urgently, asked us for years to consider a residential exception there – to minimize drive-thru traffic and mitigate late night disruptions,” explained X Pellicer, the city’s Mobility Manager and project manager. “They’ve respectfully voiced their concerns at public meetings, they’ve met with the project team and city staff, and we believe this is a viable option to test it, and possibly put it into effect permanently.”

The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, which will be held on Friday, April 12 at 10:00am at the intersection of Spanish Street and Cuna Street.

The road will be closed until the ceremony is concluded, at which point, the street will be re-opened officially to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
