City to celebrate completed acquisition of Fish Island Preserve

Ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday, February 7 at 11:00am

News Flash Posted on February 10, 2025

On Friday, February 7, 2025, the City of St. Augustine will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:00am at Fish Island Preserve to recognize the completed acquisition of the Fish Island Preserve in-holding property and offer tours to attendees following the event.

In November 2019, following a tireless effort by local residents to prevent the sale and development of the 59-acre property, Fish Island was acquired by the State of Florida through an agreement with the North Florida Land Trust (NFLT) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  This included an additional option agreement that the property would be managed by the City of St. Augustine through a land management plan.

Not included in the original parcel was a small 2.6-acre inholding that was recently purchased by the City of St. Augustine, making the entire 62-acres a protected conservation area.

The public is invited to attend; however, parking is extremely limited, so carpooling is strongly encouraged.

The brief program will include remarks by Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline, Vice Mayor Barbara Blonder, Paul Thompson, and others involved with the acquisition of the property.
