City solicits input for naming of public park

Online survey available for two weeks

The City of St. Augustine is soliciting suggestions for the naming of the green space located at the corner of Weeden and DeHaven (81 Weeden Street). The property is currently unnamed but is commonly referred to as “Weeden Park”.

“The establishments of pocket parks are vital to community redevelopment. It provides residents with passive recreational space in the core of their community,” said Jaime D. Perkins, Neighborhood Services & CRA Manager. “The naming of the park is just as important as the park itself because it allows residents to play an invaluable role in honoring individuals who have had a profound impact on their community.”

The City will accept public input and suggestions for two weeks, concluding at 5:00pm on Friday, May 10.  A committee composed of one representative each from the Planning and Building, Public Works, and Communications Departments will review the public input, summarize the suggestions, and make a recommendation to the City Manager. The City Manager will offer the recommended name to the City Commission for consideration and adoption during the Monday, June 10, 2024, regular Commission meeting.

According to the resolution, suggestions should consider neighborhood or geographical identification, natural or geological features, a place or event of historical or cultural significance, the articulated preference of residents of the neighborhood surrounding the space, or a deceased person or persons who has made significant and outstanding contributions of public service to the community.

Suggestions will be gathered through an online survey or a paper version which is available for pick up in the Neighborhood Services and CRA office located at 75 King Street, Lobby B, 4th Floor.  The public survey follows a public workshop that was hosted by the City on March 26 where preliminary input was gathered. These suggestions will be included in the online survey. The survey will also provide an opportunity for additional suggestions. The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/G9VWN3F

Submissions may also be provided in person or mailed to: Neighborhood Services & CRA Division, 75 King Street, Lobby B 4th Floor.
