Are you ready for hurricane season? NOAA Predicts an especially active storm season, which runs from June 1 - November 1. Make sure to plan ahead, keep supplies ready in case of emergencies, and know your evacuation zone. Visit the St. Johns County Emergency Management website or call 904-824-5550 to learn more.



Prepare Your Home Before the Storm!

Prepare your roof

INSPECT YOUR ROOF

Before hurricane season, have a licensed roof contractor inspect, perform repairs, and double-check the integrity of your roof, and double-check the integrity of your roof. Clear gutters and drains, trim nearby trees.


Prepare your windows

PROTECT YOUR WINDOWS

Install impact resistant windows or hurricane shutters. Otherwise, be ready to cover your windows with 5/8” plywood when a storm is approaching. Duct tape provides NO protection from things like tree limbs that fall during a storm.

Take photos for insurance

PHOTO DOCUMENATION

Take photos and video of your home and all of your belongings for insurance purposes. If you need to submit a claim, backup documentation may be needed. Refer back to your policy for more information.

Prepare your yard

PREPARE YOUR YARD

  • Unhealthy trees and limbs, yard furniture and decorations are among objects can cause damages.
  • Keep your trees pruned, clean out your gutters on a regular basis.
  • Properly dispose of any piles of tree limbs or debris.
  • Bring in all large yard items, such as furniture, grills, and bird baths.
  • Do not drain your pool. Instead add extra chlorine and turn off power to pool equipment.
Sandbags

SANDBAGS

Sandbag distribution sites will be located according to projected storm impacts. The County will provide 20 sandbags to residents and the material to fill them. Residents should bring a shovel and gloves to fill and load their sandbags. Visit the EOC website here to learn more.

Prior to a storm, sandbag availability and locations will be announced through City's social media, the City's website, via text message alerts, or subscribe to receive emails here.

Future Without Project Predictions

At the April 24, 2024 public meeting held at the Willie Galimore Center, the Army Corps of Engineers presented their findings on the Future Without Projects modeling run completion.

Tune in to the monthly webinars to learn more. Another in-person public meeting will be scheduled for the fall to discuss the Initial Array of Alternatives that will stem from the Future Without Projects modeling completion.

FMA Outreach Meeting 2023

Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program

Public Meeting Scheduled August 19, 2024 

On Monday, August 19, 2024 at 6:00PM the City in partnership with its consultant Quality Engineering and Surveying (QES) will be hosting a workshop at City Hall, 75 King St, in the Alcazar Room, on the 2024 FMA Program Application Cycle.

The FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) program is a resource provided to the City meant to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To qualify, residents must have NFIP backed insurance no later than August 31, 2024. The FMA Program is a nationally competitive annual FEMA grant program. Applications will be due October 1, 2024.

Prioritization is given to those structures listed as Severe Repetitive Loss and Repetitive Loss which is determined by FEMA. To learn more, please email us here or visit the city's website.

Hurricane Preparedness Distribution event in Jacksonville

Saturday, June 15 from 9:00am to 12:00pm


On Saturday, June 15 from 9:00am to 12:00pm there will be a Hurricane Preparedness Distribution event at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds (510 Fairgrounds Place). At this event, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to be prepared for hurricane season, meet community partners and learn how they can help, and receive shelf stable food and supplies that they need to have on hand in the event of a hurricane. Free workshop on Tuesday, June 18 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm


On Tuesday, June 18 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch (101 Library Blvd) of the library, St Johns County Emergency Management will be discussing the ins and outs of hurricane preparedness. During this informative session, residents can learn about hurricanes, find out how to best prepare, identify what evacuation zone they are in, and learn how they can become more resilient to natural disasters.
