City Commission welcomes Poet Laureate Norma Sherry

NORMA SHERRY HEADSHOT

Introduction scheduled for Monday, November 14

On Monday, November 14, 2022, the City Commission will introduce the city’s first Poet Laureate, Norma Sherry, at the beginning of its regularly scheduled meeting, which starts at 5:00pm.

The Poet Laureate program resolution was sponsored by Commissioner Roxanne Horvath and established in June.  After reviewing applications from eligible candidates, Sherry was selected by majority vote of the commission.

As a volunteer, the Poet Laureate serves as a herald for poets and their work, is dedicated to building a literary community through poetry, and encourages a love of poetry among people of all ages.

Sherry will represent the City of St. Augustine and the art of poetry through outreach by participating in City-sponsored events, dedications, or memorials.  She will select and present original or appropriate works to be read aloud.

As a professional writer, Sherry is the recipient of an Emmy Award, a Clarion Award for Women in Communications, five Telly Awards and numerous other notable commendations.

As she likes to tell it, Sherry has been a writer “since she was old enough to put pen to paper.”
