Tour guide license
A business tax receipt is required for anyone who offers to show and describe the points of interest and historical places in the city.

Tour guides must be 18 years of age or older and must pass a one-time examination regarding, among other things, their knowledge of the history of the city, names and location of streets and highways, proper designations, and the history of various points of historical and general interest within the city and its vicinity.

Tour Guide Study Booklets are available at the Customer Service Center, 50 Bridge Street for $12.00, which pays for the book and test.  Tour guide exams are given on Wednesday and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  Other testing times are available by appointment only.  Call 904-825-1037 to inquire.

The business tax receipt cost for a guide is $8.00 and there is a $10.00 administrative fee.  All business tax receipts expire September 30 of each year and must be renewed annually.

An additional “driver for hire” fee of $25.00 is required for individuals driving tour-based vehicles and horse-drawn carriages, which must be renewed each year for a $10.00 fee.

Business tax receipts are issued in person by the Department of Finance, Budget and Management at the Financial Services Center, 50 Bridge Street.

Taxi cab license
Any person who drives or operates a motorized or non-motorized vehicle for the purpose of carrying passengers for hire or compensation, including, taxicabs, horse-drawn vehicles, trailer trains, or other vehicles used for sightseeing in the city must obtain a license from the City.

Taxi cab licenses are issued by the Financial Services Department, on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 8:30 - 10:30 am.  You will need to appear in person and present a valid driver's licens, at 50 Bridge Street.  Please call if you have questions: 904.825.1037.

Pet license
Owners of cats and or dogs within the City of St. Augustine are required to register their pets annually with the City.  View the City Ordinances for Animals.

To register an animal, the owner needs to present current rabies certificate for each cat and/or dog, provide some descriptive information about the animal (i.e. name, breed, color and sex) and pay the annual registration fee: 

  • Male $3.00
  • Female (spayed) $3.00
  • Female (unspayed) $5.00    

Upon registration, the owner will be provided with an information tag, which must be attached to the animal’s collar.
